Is the Key to a Startup’s Success a Low CEO Salary?
Earlier this week TechCrunch hosted TechCrunch50. It was a chance for 50+ startup software companies to present and demo their products. Along with product showcases, Michael Arrington and his crew interviewed some of the top names in the webspace.
He had an compelling interview with Peter Thiel, co-founder of Paypal and also a Venture Capitalist at The Founders Fund. They talked about a varitey of issues but the most interesting part was what the best predictor of start up success is. According to YouNoodle, an online company that analyzes and creates certain quantitative metrics that work very well in startups success. One key to a startups success is low CEO pay. Peter said:
The lower the CEO salary, the more likely it is to succeed.
The CEO’s salary sets a cap for everyone else. If it is set at a high level, you end up burning a whole lot more money. It aligns his interest with the equity holders. But [beyond that], it goes to whether the mission of the company is to build something new or just collect paychecks.
In practice we have found that if you only ask one question, ask that.
