Are You Ready For Your Dream Job?

Every year Fortune puts out a list of the top companies to work for in the upcoming year.  This year’s list of 100 puts companies in the medical, food supply and technology fields in their top 20.  Technology companies such as Google, Microsoft, Cisco, Accenture and Booz Allen Hamilton all topped the list.

If it has always been a dream of yours to work for some of the companies mentioned above or any of the companies on the list, what is holding you back?  Below we have listed some things to think about before pursuing your dream job, which will hopefully get you closer to landing the job and scoring the role you have always wanted.

• Do you know what your dream job actually is?
  • Know industries are you most interested in working within
  • Know what you want to accomplish
  • Know what responsibilities you would like to have
• What type of skills or background is required to obtain this goal?
  • Look into beefing up your skills and get the type of experience needed to thrive at this position
  • Update your resume and highlight the key skills needed
• Is there anyone in you personal or professional network that holds a similar position?
  • If personal, talk to them about how they got their current position, what challenges they deal with and what benefits they see from it.
  • If professional, attempt to get in contact with key members of the team and discuss company and position 
• Have you made a list of target companies you would be interested in working for?
  • Do detailed research on each one of those companies you may be interested in
  • Make sure their goals and plans for the future align with yours
  • Visit the company website and look for job postings.  This way you can get a feel for the type of person they are looking to hire
  • Get in contact with a Professional Headhunter.  Specifically one which work in the specific niche of the marketplace you want to work for.  By doing this you are speaking with someone who knows the ins and outs of the industry, they know what companies are hot to work for and what companies are not
• Have you taken the steps to prove to potential employers that you are the Rock Star Talent needed to take their company and services to the next level?
  • Create an online profile detailing your achievements and visions
  • Show you are an expert in your field by keeping up or contributing to a blog or website that pertains to industry or marketplace of your dream job
  • Keep up to date on marketplace news by joining groups with similar interests and reading blogs by industry leaders
