Watching the 2008 Presidential Election coverage, I was surprised to see how often the media referred to websites such as Twitter and Facebook to get updates from the voting public. It also surprised me to see how often Barack Obama used technology such as Twitter and text messaging to keep in contact with his supporters throughout his campaign. This election seemed to have more first time and younger voters than previous years. It serves as an example of just how connected the new generations of voters are to technology.
In November of 2007 Obama released his technology plan, stating that the United States was in need of a Technology Czar, aka CTO of America. This new CTO will ensure government officials hold open meetings, broadcast live webcasts of those meetings, and use blogging software, wikis, open comments to communicate policies with Americans and be deeply involved in overseeing a federally-backed $50 billion venture capital fund that Obama has proposed to develop more environmentally friendly technology.
21st century technology has made it more convenient in terms of communication within our nation and outside our nation. Someone needs to be on the front lines of the latest trends and implement those trends into our society from a government standpoint.
So Election Day has come and gone. For those of you who are hung over from too much celebration its time to start thinking about who our new President Elect – Barack Obama should appoint as the nations first CTO. Any ideas?
